The ‘stunning’ thinness of the iPhone 17 Air

Ultra thin, but how thin exactly?

The iPhone 17 Air is said to be very thin. But leaks have given different numbers on exactly how thin Apple can achieve.

Recent reports have focused on the 6mm figure, however, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone 17 Air could reach 5.5mm thinness.

While Mr. Kuo thinks the iPhone 17 Air could reach 5.5mm thinness, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg It was previously believed that the iPhone 17 Air would be about 16mm thinner than the iPhone 2 Pro, at 6.25mm. 

If the 5.5mm figure is accurate, the iPhone 17 Air will become the thinnest iPhone ever, surpassing the record of the iPhone 6 (6.9mm) launched in 2014. 

The 5.5mm thickness will be about 30% thinner than the iphone 16 (7.8mm) and 33% thinner than the iphone 16 pro models (8.25mm). The iPhone 17 Air’s thickness is also not too different from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro released last year.

This iPad Pro is considered Apple’s thinnest device to date, measuring just 5.1mm thick.

Slim design for added appeal

Apple hopes this ultra-thin design will be more appealing than the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus models, which have not sold as well as the standard and Pro models. 

Apple discontinued the iPhone mini (5.4 inches) after the iPhone 13 mini, and the iPhone 16 Plus is expected to be the last “Plus” version.

According to Kuo, the iPhone 17 Air will be 5.5mm thin at its thinnest point, but it may still have a protruding camera cluster. Apple is expected to equip a single 48-megapixel camera on the back. The reason is space constraints in such a thin design of the device.

Price and configuration

Initially, leaks suggested that the iPhone 17 Air would be more expensive than the Pro models, but that seems unlikely. 

This will be a mid-range iPhone model, with a 6.6-inch screen. The device is equipped with an A19 chip (not as fast as the A19 Pro of the Pro models).

Additionally, the 17 Air will use a custom Apple modem chip that supports 5G but won’t reach the fastest mmWave speeds.

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to launch in September 9, alongside the iPhone 2025, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
